Database Administrator: Microsoft SQL
A vacancy exists at Gijima; for a Senior Microsoft SQL Server Database Administrator. The successful candidate will be responsible for contracted Microsoft SQL Server L Database Support services to various clients.
The responsible person must possess a high degree of experience across all versions of Microsoft SQL Server, including in all of the following versions of Microsoft SQL Server 2000, 2005, 2008, 2008R2, 2012, 2014, 2016.
ACCOUNTABILITIES & RESPONSIBILITIES:
Installation, configuration, upgrade - Installation of the database software, knowledge of the hardware prerequisites for an efficient database server, install appropriate new releases and patches. Understand an implement multi-tiered systems to support Development, Test and Production environments
Backup and recovery - Developing, implementing, and periodically testing a backup and recovery plan, knowledge to use backups to return the database to operational status and make management aware of the cost/risk tradeoffs of various backup methods to meet the required Recovery Point Objectives and the Recovery Time Objectives.
Database security - Must understand the particular security model that the database product uses and how to use it effectively to control access to the data, setting up user accounts to control logins to the database, setting permissions on various parts of the database, tracking who did what with the database.
Storage and capacity planning - Planning how much disk storage will be required and monitoring available disk space, monitoring growth trends and advise management on long-term capacity plans.
Performance monitoring and tuning - Monitoring the database server on a regular basis to identify bottlenecks, performance enhancement and multiple level tuning - capacity management of the server hardware, operating system configuration and optimisation, database layout and schema tuning, types of indexing chosen.
Troubleshooting - When things do go wrong with the database server, the DBA needs to know how to quickly ascertain the problem and to correct it without losing data or making the situation worse.
High availability - Schedule for a maintenance “window” when the database may be shut down, planning for redundant hardware and/or software components.
Monitoring – Monitor the operating system and database logs and parameters to detect anomalies like unexpected growth, slow through put or issues related to backups, clustering, virtualization as well as possible security threats and incidents.
Task automation – Use T-Sql and Windows PowerShell scripts to automate repetitive tasks, monitor system state and to alert the responsible staff of anomalies and restorative actions.
Documentation skills – Design and landscape of SQL environment. Drafting of Standard Operational Procedures, checklists and standards. Maintenance of the evolution of the database environment, infrastructure and security attributes.
DBMS implementation and upgrades.
Ability to deploy and support SQL solutions from day 1.
Policy set-up and enforcement.
Solid experience and understanding of MS SQL Server, High Availability and Clustering.
Experience in Microsoft SQL Reporting Services will be an advantage.
Experience of working within a busy environment in a Tier 3 role.
Experience in Microsoft Server Operating Systems.
Experience in virtual technologies will be an advantage (VMware, Hyper-V)
At least 5 years’ experience in the Infrastructure Services Support Business.
Good understanding of recovery processes.
ITIL V3 methodologies certified foundation training will be an advantage.
Stay current with new technologies.
Innovative ideas to improve service delivery.
Identification of problems.
Assist with DR exercises and processes
Create & Maintain relevant documentation
Create and Maintain Standard Operating Procedures (SOP’s)
Ensuring all SLA’s are met.
