Our Client based in the Vaal are looking for an experienced Occupational Health and Safety Officer from a Food Manaufacturing background (3 - 5 years experience). They will need someone qualified with a National Diploma in Safety Management and a SAMTRAC qualification
Duties & Responsibilities
Role Purpose and Contribution:
The key reason for the existence of this role:
To support implementation, adherence, enforcement and monitoring of SHEQ systems, policies procedures and legal requirements in order to facilitate compliance and safe working environment.
This role supports the strategy by:
Running a SHE Management Programme that will ensure legal compliance and activities that promote a strong safety culture e.g. reduce injuries, training and awareness, safety communication and continuous improvement.
Implementing, improving and maintaining procedures and work instructions required for compliance to integrated system, legislation and relevant customer standards. Execution of internal auditing for all systems requirements. Risk assessment, incident management, plant hygiene management, Pest Control and waste management.
This role interacts with the following key people:
Internal and External Stakeholders
Application of technical skills considers safety, health, environment and community awareness and goals.
Implementation of ISO systems.
Successful implementation of new or revised systems.
Team with adequate knowledge of what is required to bring about the change.
Updated procedures and work instructions to reflect new/revised/updated ISO systems.
Awareness and acceptance of new or revised system amongst Employees and Management
Establishing and implementation of new/revised/updated ISO systems.
Lead the Team on the technical expertise of the new/revised/updated ISO systems.
Review and update procedures and work instructions to reflect new/revised/updated ISO systems.
Create awareness of new/revised/updated ISO systems in the workplace and influence acceptance of required change.
Update Contractor Agreements on file.
Ongoing improvements and updates made to Legal Register.
Ongoing improvements and updates made to Safety
Upkeep of the Contractor Agreements.
Assist SHEQ Manager with the updating of Legal Compliance Register for Safety, Health and Environment.
Awareness of legal updates to SHE Committee members
Review and update the Safety Work Activity
Internal audits are done and continuous improvement is noted.
Findings are received by individual departments.
Participation in DQS, Customer, Ethical, SHE Surveys and Legal Compliance audits.
Regularly audit all areas on the integrated system.
Raise findings and forward to SHEQ Co-ordinator for capturing on Incident Management Database.
Regularly audit contractors, both permanent and temporary on SHEQ systems.
Actively partake in all DQS Audits.
Actively partake in all Customer Audits.
Actively partake in all Ethical Audits.
Actively partake in all SHE Surveys
Actively partake in Legal Compliance audits for Safety and Environment
Follow up of Audit Findings
C/A’s taken that do prevent reoccurrence.
Continuous improvement on the closure times for N/Cs.
Assist all departments on issues that prevent the clearance of N/C’s.
Follow up on audit findings until closure.
All individuals on site are inducted including ad hoc Contractors.
Reduction in injuries and an elevated awareness of safety amongst employees.
Continual SHEQ training being undertaken.
Motivate safety reps and ensure that are fully conversant in what is required from them.
Feedback from SHE committee meetings that SHEQ Officer brings about change.
Regular meetings held with SHE Teams (First aiders, Safety reps, fire fighters).
Ensure She teams are fully conversant in what is required from them.
Co-ordination of fire fighting drills.
Random inspections and monitoring of water channel
Raise safety incidents/accidents, near misses, unsafe conditions/acts, unsafe behaviour incidents on incident management database.
Be part of the incident investigation team
Actively participate in the departmental risk assessments and High Fatality Topics risk assessments.
Form part of the community forum.
Knowledge of Foodstuff, Cosmetic and Disinfectant Act
Pest Control Management
SHE related legislations understanding and ability to advice.
In-depth understanding and knowledge and ability to execute OSHAS act /code requirements.
MS Office computer programmes.
Ability to operate the Intranet and Internet.
Desired Experience & Qualification
National Diploma in Safety Management
Diploma in food safety Management
SAMTRAC or equivalent
