Senior Technical Underwriter - Commercial and Domestic Insurance
Required to provide quality Underwriting outcomes for the Underwriting function through effectively maintaining underwriting standards and providing quality client and broker service while improving client base and income
Must be FAIS compliant
Relevant Regulatory Examination and Insurance qualification.
Tertiary qualification a preference.
Minimum Eight (8) years’ underwriting experience.
Must be technically proficient.
General knowledge of Commercial and Domestic property, including Competitive conditions;
Finance and actuarial concepts;
Professional/General Business skills: Managerial courage;
Ability to set direction,
Create alignment and inspire/motivate;
Work cross-functionally by engaging and motivating people;
Effectively (listening, verbal, written, etc.);

Execute the segment strategy for a division to attain profit, quality, growth, multi-line diversification, and operational objectives; monitor execution against the appetite and correct situations where objectives are not being met
Ensure underwritings focus efforts on sources of profitable growth, category execution, multi-line accounts and building expertise.
Ensure that submissions are triaged and prioritised and skill-based routing practices enable the right underwriters to work the submissions in the right order.
Analyse proposals prepared by underwriters and use letters of authority to provide approval for risk selection and acceptance, coverage, and price.
Implement and maintain skill-based authority levels by line through underwriter certification.
Collaborate with other functions and support initiatives in the areas of product development, operations, process, technology, distribution.
Lead the division's selection, development, and management of underwriters needed to diversify the book and grow profitably; ensure that expertise is fostered through development, coaching and mentoring mechanisms.
Maintain a quality assurance process that identifies and corrects gaps in decision making.
Processing of new policies according to Company procedures.
Renewal & Renewal Invites to be done timeously
Processing endorsements / amendments
Handling queries from Credit Control department.
Cancellation of policies.
Handling queries from brokers – Turnaround time 24 hours
General correspondence with broker via e-mail, fax or telephone.
Diarise issues that need to be followed up.
Ensure filing of closings and schedules according to Company procedure.
Assist with underwriting queries internal and external – Turnaround time 24 hours Comply with the Commercial Treaty arrangements.
Ensure all risks are written within our Treaty limits.
No declined risks are accepted or renewed.
If required FAC is placed by negotiating with NNAC.
Perform all other functions as required or requested within reason.
The work will consist of the following main functions:
Underwrite, rating and risk analysis and quote on new business.
Ensuring that policies and amendments are issued without error.
Checking all documentation to ensure correctness before processing.
Quotations & Rating
Respond to queries and resolve them satisfactorily within scope of authority.
General administration which entails following up on quotations and renewals, checking that policies are processed and sent out and corresponding with brokers.
Develop relationships with clients and ensure high level of service
Self-starter and highly self-motivated
Accuracy and high attention to detail.
Presentable and professional at all times
Ability to overcome objections
Ability to work with a diverse range of personalities
